Leave Cycles
A cycle in Simple Leave represents the 12-month reporting period your business uses to manage and track employee leave. Most companies align this with the calendar year (e.g., January 1st – December 31st covering 365 days), but you can define any period that fits your internal policies.
It is not possible to create a cycle that overlaps with another cycle. Cycles must have start and end dates that are not in use by other cycles.
What You Can Do in a Cycle
Each cycle contains settings that help determine how leave is calculated throughout the year. These include:
Working Days
You can set which weekdays are considered working days for your organisation (e.g. Monday to Friday).
This setting currently applies to the entire organisation and cannot be configured individually per employee.
Public Holidays and Non-Working Days / Company Holidays
You can manage public holidays and custom non-working days within a cycle:
-
Add default national holiday dates to your cycle.
-
Delete holidays if they don't apply to your organisation.
-
Add custom non-working days, such as company-wide shutdowns or additional leave days.
These dates will automatically be excluded from leave calculations when employees submit time off requests.

Each cycle has a state that controls whether it is active and editable:
-
Open: The cycle is active. Leave requests can be made, employees can be added to the cycle.
-
Closed: The cycle is locked. No further changes can be made, and employees cannot submit requests for dates in that cycle.
It's good practice to close past cycles to prevent accidental changes, while keeping the current and future ones open.
